A day in the life of an SMBC Intern: Ayanfe Coker

We caught up with Ayanfe, Prudential Risk Analyst Intern, to learn more about his time at the firm.

I chose to do my placement at SMBC Group because…

I find a career in the financial world to be extremely exciting and felt that SMBC would be the perfect place to immerse myself into this sector. Moreover, I was attracted by the strong heritage of the bank. Being a Japanese bank, the environment feels warm and welcoming, and it is the most diverse work atmosphere I’ve been in at this point in my career.

My job involves…

I am a prudential risk management intern. This encompasses everything from recovery and resolution planning documents to ICAAP documents. On a more day-to-day basis, I facilitate a lot of meetings involving prudential and executive board matters. I am responsible for these things so keeping myself organised is very important.

On a typical day…

I am compiling materials for the meetings I facilitate or am researching the top risks that the bank faces.

What I enjoy most about my internship…

The close connections we keep with the placement cohort. Every lunch a fair few of us play table tennis together. It is fun and a good opportunity to have a chat and foster strong working relationships.

Top tips for future interns considering a placement at SMBC Group…

Research the bank and the role and make sure you know as much as you can about what you’re getting into. I reached out to a former intern on LinkedIn, who I now work with, to find out more about the application process. She gave meinvaluable information and help on how to best prepare. That is how I managed to do so well in my interview process and ultimately secure the placement.
