What does a typical weekday look like for a summer intern at Redington? Well, let us find out.
Meet Rebecca Arnott. Each day of the internship can differ, but in this blog, Rebecca gives us an insight into what a typical day working at Redington was like and provides some advice for students who want to join the internship programme.
6.30am: Get up and ready for the day. The office attire is smart casual, so I get ready and head off for a relaxed commute to work.
9.00am: After arriving at the office early for a coffee and a catch-up with co-workers and fellow interns, I go through all my emails and reply to anything new. To prepare for the day ahead, I put together a to-do list and have a look at minutes from previous client meetings to prepare for the week ahead.
9.30am: First stop the Frank Redington meeting room for a client catch-up. It’s great to be involved in these first-hand. I often contribute to our team by taking the minutes for these meetings, this is a useful way to learn more about how Redington helps their clients.
10.30am – 12.00pm: After the meetings, I work on a variety of projects, which could be for clients or research papers, which help me learn more about different types of investors and the role Redington plays. When I started my internship, I was allocated a buddy to, guide me through the process and offer a helping hand. So I also use this time to ask my Buddy and Managers questions about the tasks and ensure I am able to do the best possible job.
1:00pm – Lunch: For lunch the interns and I would often grab a Tesco’s meal deal. On Fridays, we usually treat ourselves to somewhere nice in the area after a busy week, such as Itsu next door!
2.00pm – 4.00pm: After lunch, I get together with my fellow interns to work on our intern project. This gives us a great chance to work on a collaborative project where we could conduct our own research as a team.
We work together to create a PowerPoint presentation that we will then go on to present to the other staff.
4.00pm – 5.00pm: Our flexible schedules mean I get the opportunity to schedule catchups with different people at Redington. This is a great opportunity to learn more about different areas of the business and what everybody is currently working on.
5.00pm: Nearly the end of the day! We round the day off by consolidating on what we have learnt, making sure we have understood and completed everything we have been working on and preparing for the next days ahead.
Looking back over the internship if we were to give advice to students joining the internship programme we would say...
- Don’t be afraid to ask: You want to get the most out of your summer internship with Redington so make sure to be asking questions! No question is silly, everyone at Redington wants you to get the most out of this opportunity. So, if you are ever stuck on a new concept from training or just want to learn more about the company, just ask!
- Be enthusiastic: If you want to make a long-lasting impression on Redington and really have a meaningful impact in your work, always offer to help if you have the capacity! By volunteering to help people with their work you not only learn more about the work within Redington but also get to meet new people.
- Coffee catchups: During the first few weeks especially, it is essential to schedule coffee catchups! Reach out to as many people as possible, you will be able to learn from their experiences and build a great network of people to go to for any questions you might have.
I have had an amazing time at Redington during my 6-week internship. It has been insightful and given me the confidence to explore a future in the investment consulting world. Thank you to everyone in Redington for taking the time to guide me, you have truly made this experience remarkable!
